Neora Valley National Park is one of the wildest corners of North Bengal. Thick forests of rhododendron, oak and bamboo climb steeply from the foothills to high ridges, and they are home to the red panda along with many rare birds and other Himalayan wildlife.
Visiting Neora Valley
Most travellers enter from the Lava side, so stays in Lava, Kolakham and Rishop make the easiest bases. Entry needs a forest department permit, and the park usually closes during the monsoon, so check the latest rules before you plan your day. Spotting a red panda takes luck and patience, but the forest walks and birdsong are a reward on their own.
What to carry
Good walking shoes, a rain jacket and a warm layer. Ask your host to arrange a local guide who knows the trails.
